Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  5. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  6. Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf or rolls.
  7. Place on a baking sheet and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Make a few slashes on top of the dough and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

  • For an extra crusty loaf, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
